Learn about scar camouflage at Monterey Med Ink

How does it work?

The all natural and hypertonic solution is penetrated with a tattoo machine and is works by the process of Osmosis

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the size and location of the area to be treated. The artist must review a photo or schedule an in-person consultation. Quotes will not be sent for a sight unseen. Pricing may be quoted for several sessions. Monterey Med Ink charges anywhere from $500 - $1,500+ per session(s).

A non-refundable deposit is required to secure the appointment, and the remaining amount quoted is due at the first session. Follow-up sessions are scheduled thereafter. If you need a payment plan, check out our option with Cherry to see if it's right for you.

How can I book my appointment?

The booking link allows you to book and submit a deposit, but your appointment must be approved and quoted for pricing before booking. Failure to obtain approval can result in forfeiture of your deposit if booked online.

How long will it take to heal?

The average healing time is 6-8 weeks. Healing varies per individual, especially since we are working with compromised skin. Factors such as age, diet, previous sun exposure, genetics, lifestyle habits, and adherence to aftercare instructions will play a key role in the healing process.

What should I expect after the appointment?

Immediately after the appointment, your skin will be red and irritated. By the first week, swelling will have decreased but may still be red and begin to itch. As the weeks go on, you will notice your scars getting lighter. You may experience your scar go through a dark phase before it begins to lighten, this is most common for tummy tucks but can happen with any scar.

How long do results last?

Once final color results are achieved, skin camouflage can last up to 5 years or more if the correct post-treatment instructions are followed.

Is the procedure painful?

Treatments are conducted by penetrating the skin with tattoo needles and a hand machine. Pain tolerance varies among individuals, but on average, the pain is rated 6/10, with 10 being the most painful. A pain relief solution can be applied to broken skin to assist with any pain. Numbing agents are not used as they blanch the skin, making it difficult to see where the scar ends.

Can you treat keloid/hypertrophic scars?

Keloid and hypertrophic scars must be treated with injections by your physician. Once all your treatments have been completed and fully healed (1-2 weeks after injections), we are happy to schedule a consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Treating compromised skin requires patience. The number of sessions will vary per individual, but 3-6 sessions are typically recommended for optimum results.

How soon after surgery or an injury can I camouflage my scars?

Scars can usually be camouflaged after six months, provided they do not present signs of infection, swelling, or scabbing.

Who is not a good candidate?

People who are under the age of 18, pregnant or lactating, have a history of keloid scarring, have bleeding disorders, are prone to seizures, or have any other health condition where tattoos are not recommended. It is your responsibility to seek your doctor's permission if necessary. If you are unsure how to treat your scars, the Mayo Clinic has some great advice, but let's also connect to discuss.

Can scar camouflage work on all types of scars?

Scar camouflage is effective on most types of scars, including surgical scars, injury scars, and stretch marks. However, results may vary based on the scar's age, size, and condition.

Will scar camouflage match my skin tone?

We try our best to match your skin tone closely. However, the color of the healed results may vary because the ink color can change as your skin heals. We aim to make the results less noticeable, but please understand that we can't completely make the scar disappear.

Can I undergo scar camouflage if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, you can undergo scar camouflage if you have sensitive skin. During the consultation, you must inform us if you have sensitive skin or any skin conditions. We'll take extra care to ensure your comfort and safety during the procedure. However, if your skin is sensitive, it may require additional sessions. We work with as much ink as the skin can safely handle in one session.

What aftercare is required following a scar camouflage session?

Like traditional tattoos, aftercare is crucial for optimal results. This includes keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding sun exposure, and following specific aftercare instructions provided by your technician. Proper aftercare helps ensure the longevity and appearance of the camouflage.

Can scar camouflage be done on scars that are not fully healed?

No, scars need to be fully healed, which typically takes about six months, before undergoing camouflage. This ensures the best results and minimizes the risk of complications.
