Is the tattoo painful?

Everyone's pain tolerance will differ. Depending on the type of breast reconstruction, you may feel little to no pain as sensation in this area typically decreases after surgery. Numbing agents can be applied to provide a more comfortable experience if needed.

What can I expect at my appointment?

Once you arrive, the consultation will include reviewing your medical history and consent, discussing your goals, and selecting your areola size and colors. The total appointment time can range from 2 to 3.5 hours, with most of the time spent on the consultation and selection process. Each areola can take about 45 minutes to an hour to get tattooed.

Can my native areolas be lightened or made smaller?

Unfortunately, the native areola tissue that may have darkened after surgery or cancer treatments cannot be lightened with tattoo inks nor can it be tattooed for a smaller appearance.

Can I still get areola restoration if I have nipple necrosis?

Yes, you may need approval from your physician but your areolas can be tattooed. You may need more sessions as a necrotic nipple and areola may have a harder time retaining the ink.

When can I get my areolas tattooed?

You must be at least 12 weeks post-surgery and have no signs of infection, swelling, or scabbing. Monterey Med Ink may require approval from your oncologist or surgeon before your appointment. The American Cancer Society says you should speak to your surgeon if you have questions about reconstruction.

Do you accept health insurance?

Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998, your areola tattoo can be partially or fully covered by your health insurance. The full amount of the service is due at the time of the appointment. You will receive the appropriate documents to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

Can I bring a support person?

Absolutely! You may bring one person to your appointment who can provide support or offer opinions during the selection process.

How long will the tattoo last?

Our studio uses inks intended for permanent results, just like a regular tattoo. However, depending on the type of reconstruction, you may need a touch-up session to achieve the desired color or details.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Before your appointment, avoid sun exposure, alcohol, and smoking, as these can affect healing. Make sure to stay hydrated and follow any specific instructions provided during your consultation.

What aftercare is required following the procedure?

Aftercare includes keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding sun exposure, and following specific instructions provided by your technician to ensure optimal healing and results.

How long does it take to heal?

Healing usually takes 2-4 weeks. During this time, you may experience some redness and swelling, which will gradually subside.

Can I see examples of previous work?

Yes, we can provide examples of previous 3D nipple and areola tattoos to help you understand what to expect and to ensure you are comfortable with the procedure.

Will my new tattoos fade over time?

Like all tattoos, 3D nipple and areola tattoos may fade over time. Periodic touch-ups can help maintain their appearance.
